Living Positive: HIV/AIDS in East Tennessee
I worked with two other reporters and a photographer to focus on the epidemic as a local issue in East Tennessee. The project, which ran as a series in 2005, was supported by a mini-fellowship from the Kaiser Family Foundation. It featured interviews with various esteemed religious leaders and policymakers, scientists and advocates including Dr. Anthony Fauci, an expert on prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, and author/AIDS activist Marvelyn Brown. The following is a list of my contributions to the series, which earned awards from the East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists and the Association of Health Care Journalists.
  • AIDS comes home: One family fights myths, stigma of disease after relatives' deaths
  • Soul solution: Black churches open doors, embrace formerly taboo subject
  • Bringing AIDS education to rural East Tennessee
  • AIDS education and prevention starts in the classrooms
  • Camp sight: Retreats help those with HIV/AIDS see inner beauty, purpose of life
  • Housing for AIDS patients provides compassion, companionship
  • Good samaritans: Faith-based groups minister to those living with HIV/AIDS
  • Excerpts from resolutions on HIV/AIDS by religious groups
  • He's a man on a mission
  • AIDS on the bookshelves
  • Links and resources
  • Hope---for the past, present and future
